Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, Hitoshi Omika, and Eiko Ishibashi on Evil Does Not Exist
Director Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, lead actor Hitoshi Omika, and composer Eiko Ishibashi discuss the NYFF61 Main Slate selection Evil Does Not Exist in a conversation moderated by FLC Vice President of Programming Florence Almozini. Evil Does Not Exist is currently playing at FLC. Get tickets: www.filmlinc.org/films/evil-does-not-exist/
Deep in the forest of the small rural village Harasawa, single parent Takumi lives with his young daughter, Hana, and takes care of odd jobs for locals, chopping wood and hauling pristine well water. The overpowering serenity of this untouched land of mountains and lakes, where deer peacefully roam free, is about to be disrupted by the imminent arrival of the Tokyo company Playmode, which is ready to start construction on a glamping site for city tourists-a plan, which Takumi and his neighbors discover, that will have dire consequences for the ecological health and cleanliness of their community. The potent and foreboding new film from Oscar-winning director Ryûsuke Hamaguchi (Drive My Car and Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy, both NYFF59) is a haunting, entirely unexpected cinematic experience that reconstitutes the boundaries of the ecopolitical thriller. Intensified by a rapturous, ominous score by Eiko Ishibashi, this mesmeric journey diverges from country-vs-city themes to straddle the line between the earthy and the metaphysical. An NYFF61 Main Slate selection. A Sideshow/Janus Films release.

Such a nice video. I knew about this movie from this MV Jose Gonzalez - Stay Alive | The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" on youtube channel "soul gravity". My first watch of this movie was kinda ruined/distorted: because I watched the MV first, I thought Walter's adventure was kind of a planned event by Sean O'Connell, or this is just a comedy like Bruce Almighty. During my first watch, since it's a plot that at this stage of Walter's life everything seem to "connect all the dots", that it's like a re-confirm that "the gift" from Sean O'Connell is not just the wallet (plus that 1/ he made such a big deal with his words in the letter and the imprinted LIFE's motto on the wallet, 2/ Walter had an illusion that Sean was calling him to join the adventure) but a whole planned adventure: Walter, if you want that 25 negative, take the adventure to track me down and you will get it, your enjoying the very now moment of your like, it's more important that 25th negative itself. You only focus on the 25 negative, but the whole picture is that you should really enjoy your life and experiencing the world. I noticed that the whole motive for the unexpected adventure is that Walter had his job at stake because of the missing 25th negative that he had to search for it everywhere; this plot isn't net at all. We also clearly aware that Walter really really want to take an adventure (that why he had illusions), and a fact is that he world 16 years in LIFE magazine, the motto about seeing the world is imprinted in his head; he was ripped between staying on the white collar job to keep the magazine issued regularly and goes on a trip. Up until Walter completed his climbing up the mountain and met Sean, I still think that Sean placed all the piece of breads along the way, and it's not a clear step by step guidance on how to find him, he expected that somehow Walter will fill the gap himself, that's the risk he must take, and he believe some how Walter would made the impossible possible. Turned out that the plot isn't that much planned, it's just simply a misunderstanding of where Sean put the 25 negative. After my second watching, I think I am now 60%-80% on the same track with other audience, but I still had the impression that Sean planned the trip, there's piece of clue that just match that wrong-impression (clearly the plot show that it's just coincidence, but Walter life connected the dots). I don't know if my impression would change after my third serious watch or not, but for now, although this is a really good movie, a hidden gem, but it's make me feel PRETTY UNEASY that the movie is like, after 16 years of illusions, one day when Walter's like is crumbling down (as LIFE stop issue print version and changes to a dot com) that everything MAGICALLY lead him to an adventure of his life. Think about this: Three idiots (Bollywood) also has all the dots magically connected, the plot is easy to accept; in Deadpool, the "lucky girl/domino" said she want to join Deadpool team because somehow life will work out for her, the plot is easy to accept; in Bruce Almighty, God showed up and let Bruce had the mini-ultimate power, the plot is easy to accept; Because all of these 3 plots are a blatant joke that we could easily accept them; but The MAGICALLY Life of Walter Mitty seems like telling us this is a realism situation (life is tought, shit happened, YOU CAN'T DO MUCH) and somehow everything magically connect; imagine this, you could easily accept superman movie, but if there is a movie about a guy that could run twice as fast as Usain Bolt, you wannabe know exactly, convincingly how a human being could possibly run that fast.

I watched that movie too late at night that by the ending it exceeded my bed time. I was so traumatized and couldn’t just go to bed. So I just started saying nonsense like “skibidi bop dee boo” etc from some place within and typed into UA-cam skibidi something or other and then this hilarious music video was presented to me by a band called “Little Big” and it calmed me down enough to go to bed

I had always thought of Dick Cavett as an inellectual. I had seen him interiew Isaac Asimov and was impressed. I guess that was more due to Asimov than Cavett. He is (at least through time stamp 10.01 a simpering fool. The humor is sophmoric and boring. At 21.25 it seems that she is bored with him and asks him to get on with talking about the film. I am not sure if she is unintelligent or she was just speaking at his level. i found this inspipid.

I watch/listen to a ton of interviews and talks from film makers like this one. Really think Ethan has a wonderful non fiction book in him. Not sure if some sort of memoir or something closer to film history/analysis like Tarantino's Cinema Speculation. But he's incredibly eloquent and seems to be much more thoughtful than the vast majority of actors.

No grand metaphors here which is what I kept trying to piece together. The story is literal, it's just a badly told story. A waste of an idea, ultimately trashing what should have been a beautiful redemptive moment. Covering it with pretentiousness and trying to be deep.

I watched John Wayne’s Rio Bravo, The man who shot Liberty Valence and One Eyed Jacks back to back and realised how modern and ahead of time One eyed jacks was. In the first 2 movies the protagonist was with the law and stereotypical. No disrespect to those two films which are good in their own right but in One eyed jacks the protagonist was against the law, anti- hero as they call him and it’s a character study of a man who wants to get revenge for being betrayed by his best friend. No wonder Brando is the torch bearer of Modern film acting and stories. It does not get its due among the Elite list of westerns among critics. Great movie!! Really enjoyed it
